Checking for a Warrant in Eddy County
Start with the state's official Case Lookup portal. It is the cleanest first stop for an Eddy County warrant check. A search can surface a court, a case number, a category, and a status. It is not a live warrant certificate. Nor does it show every court document. Use a result to find the right clerk, and never treat a missing entry as proof of clearance.
- Search Case Lookup with the legal name or known case number and note the court location.
- Call the issuing clerk with the name, date of birth, citation or case number, and likely city.
- Check the matching municipal court separately when the matter involves an ordinance, city traffic case, or petty misdemeanor.
- Use Eddy Sheriff Records for an existing county law-enforcement record or a formal request, not as a substitute for the court.
- Ask the court what appearance, payment, bond, motion, or written proof is required before taking action.
Start With New Mexico Case Lookup, Then Call the Eddy Court
The Case Lookup landing screen asks you to accept a public-use notice. The court guide says the service covers District, Magistrate, Municipal, Metropolitan, Appellate, and other case categories. The public-access materials add a warning, though. Basic search does not make court documents available. The portal can still leave a useful case trail, but municipal coverage is limited, and juvenile, domestic-violence, protected, sealed, or otherwise restricted material may be absent. Open New Mexico Case Lookup to locate the court that owns the case. Then ask the clerk directly whether a bench or arrest warrant is active, what triggered it, and which step confirms the disposition. The Eddy County Sheriff publishes no unified public list that fills every court gap. The portal is a public court-search entry point. It is not an individual record.

The court named in the result remains the source for current warrant instructions.
Eddy County Warrant Types
The court and the event set the type. A felony warrant from Eddy County district court is not routed like a city traffic matter. New Mexico sources say bench warrant and Failure to Appear in Court Warrant. Capias is not the controlling local label.
| Type | Typical trigger | Local file holder |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | Probable cause for an offense, often supported by a complaint, indictment, or sworn facts. | District, Magistrate, or Municipal Court |
| Bench or FTA warrant | Missed appearance, subpoena, release condition, payment, probation, contempt, or another court order. | Court handling the case |
| Search warrant | Probable cause to search a place, person, vehicle, or property. | Issuing court, with possible access limits |
| Federal or outside warrant | Another jurisdiction’s process that may surface during a local arrest or booking. | Issuing federal or outside jurisdiction |
The Carlsbad and Artesia Court Split
Eddy County splits its courts across several doors. The district location sits in Carlsbad. Carlsbad Magistrate Court is at 1949 Canal Street, and Artesia Magistrate Court is at 109 North 15th Street. The Magistrate courts take misdemeanors, DWI and traffic matters, plus felony preliminary hearings. Any felony case belongs to the Fifth Judicial District Court. The four city courts handle their own ordinances, traffic, petty misdemeanors, and municipal DWI matters. That split is why a single county search cannot answer every question. The District Court Clerk's office sits at 102 North Canal Street, Suite 240, with a central number of 575-885-4740. Carlsbad Magistrate answers at 575-885-3218. Artesia Magistrate answers at 575-746-2481. Call the court printed on the citation or case before you travel. The Fifth District's published locations page carries the separate public contact cards used for Eddy County cases.

The separate addresses are a routing detail only, and no Eddy County office listed there can recall a warrant on its own.
Inside an Eddy County Warrant Record
Official New Mexico forms offer the safest picture of what a public Eddy County warrant record can hold, without republishing anyone's file. Form 9-210 centers on probable cause. It carries the command to arrest. Form 9-212C turns to the missed court event or condition, along with bond or payment choices. It also covers execution and return. Public views can omit protected identifiers and the actual warrant document.
| Court and case | The issuing court, county or city, case number, and category that identify the file. |
|---|---|
| Person fields | Name and permitted descriptors. SSNs and addresses are not displayed in ordinary public access. |
| Reason | Probable-cause offense for an arrest warrant, or the missed appearance, payment, release, or compliance event for a bench warrant. |
| Authority | Judge, date, signature or electronic action, execution jurisdiction, and information-system destination. |
| Disposition | Service, surrender, cancellation, return unserved, issued in error, or another court-entered status. |
What Eddy Sheriff Records Can and Cannot Confirm
The Eddy County Sheriff page links to Records, Case Lookup, and Crime Stoppers. It posts no searchable active-warrant form. There is no warrant-number lookup and no complete most-wanted roster. The public records page names Records Supervisor Dawn McCarty and Records Clerk Dametra Kartchner, with 575-887-7551 as the stable first contact. The office can route a request for an existing county record. It does not promise an instant warrant answer by email. For a formal request, the county's NextRequest portal works when appropriate. Ask for an existing record, such as a service return or the disposition of a specified warrant number. IPRA does not force a public body to build a new county-wide roster. Protected law-enforcement or juvenile material may be withheld or redacted. The Sheriff page itself is a service and records directory. It is not a live warrant database.

For current warrant status, the issuing court remains the better first call.
Who Issues and Serves Eddy County Warrants
Judges issue Eddy County warrants in the court with authority over the case. The Fifth Judicial District Court handles felonies. Carlsbad and Artesia Magistrate Courts take their limited state-court criminal and traffic work. Carlsbad, Artesia, Hope, and Loving Municipal Courts issue their own city or village warrants. Authorized officers may then execute the particular warrant. That includes sheriff, municipal, state, tribal, campus, and other law enforcement.

Why MVD Does Not Issue New Mexico Warrants
New Mexico MVD can receive a court failure-to-appear or failure-to-remit notice and then impose its own license-renewal or reinstatement consequence. MVD says plainly that it does not issue warrants. The court creates, recalls, cancels, or satisfies the warrant. MVD may need court proof first. That split matters after a missed traffic date. Start with the Eddy County court named on the citation. Ask whether a bench or Failure to Appear in Court Warrant exists and what proof is needed. Then contact MVD about its separate D45 failure-to-appear or D53 failure-to-remit process. An online fine payment does not automatically prove that every court condition is complete.
Local rule of thumb: MVD may reflect the consequence, but the issuing court controls the warrant and its clearance.
If You Have an Eddy County Warrant
Start with the court and the case number. Then call the Eddy County clerk and ask what resolves the warrant: voluntary appearance, a new arraignment, a motion to recall or quash, a bond, payment, proof, or an attorney filing. Keep the court's written receipt, order, or clearance confirmation. Ask the clerk whether the cancellation, surrender, or service status has reached the law-enforcement information system. Also ask whether any MVD step remains.
Important: Talk with a lawyer before surrendering or appearing; the court must explain the current procedure, and a payment alone may not resolve every condition.
The 2025 Carlsbad Safe Surrender Lesson
New Mexico Courts ran a temporary Safe Surrender event at Eddy County Magistrate Court on August 22 and 23, 2025. The event was for people with outstanding New Mexico Magistrate bench warrants. They could appear voluntarily. The release said staff would discuss a new date, payment plan, or other compliance. It also listed 855-268-7804. Carlsbad Municipal Court handled municipal warrants during the event. Court Operations later reported 1,022 warrants cleared at the Carlsbad event. That total covers one event. It is not a current Eddy County inventory. The exception authorizing the event did not create a permanent walk-in counter, so check current New Mexico Courts program information before counting on a future date or assuming municipal and Magistrate eligibility match. The local court's page gives the event's context.

Call the issuing court before you travel to any Eddy County event, because rules and facility procedures can change.
Eddy County Warrant Records and Public Access
New Mexico's Inspection of Public Records Act, NMSA 1978 Sections 14-2-1 through 14-2-12, frames public access to Eddy County warrant records. It does not open every warrant file online. Court access rules can limit what you receive. So can sealed records, juvenile material, domestic-violence protections, active investigations, confidential sources, and personally identifying information.
Access reminders:
New Mexico IPRA statutes provide the public-records framework, but the agency may withhold or redact material closed by law.
New Mexico court access guidance explains that basic public search does not provide every document or protected field.
The court that keeps the file can explain the correct request path and whether a copy, status answer, or scheduled appearance is available.
Crime Stoppers Is a Tip Program, Not a Warrant Search
Crime Stoppers of Eddy County is a tip program the Sheriff links to, not a warrant search tool. Tips stay anonymous. You can send information through its website, the P3 Tips app, or 844-786-7227. A reward may follow when a tip leads to an arrest or felony grand-jury indictment. The program page still offers no current warrant roster. It cannot clear a court obligation either. Use it narrowly: report a crime when asked, call 911 for an emergency, and turn to Case Lookup plus the issuing court for a personal Eddy County warrant question. Never seek legal instructions from a tip line. An unlisted name proves nothing about a warrant.
Keep the roles separate: Crime Stoppers receives tips; the issuing court confirms warrant status and resolution.
City Warrant Records in Eddy County
Eddy County has four incorporated municipalities, not five. A city warrant starts with the city court. Its police or records route comes next. Move to the county or state system only when the underlying case requires it, since a Carlsbad or Artesia Magistrate case is not the same as a municipal one. Hope or Loving keeps its own clerk, and no countywide portal replaces that office.

Federal Tickets Near Carlsbad Follow Another Path
A federal citation or warrant is not automatically an Eddy County warrant. Eddy County sits in the Southern Division of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. Federal citation matters can use the Central Violations Bureau route. The Roswell page lists public hours and security instructions. CVB materials give a separate federal ticket contact. For a federal docket question, use the federal court or PACER, and ask which jurisdiction issued the process. The U.S. Marshals Service and Eddy County agencies may work together on enforcement. It still will not appear on the Eddy Sheriff page.
